Getting Here

With easy air and land access, getting to the Hilton Head Island area is easy.

Location
Hilton Head Island is the second largest barrier island off the East Coast and is located 40 miles north of Savannah, GA, and 90 miles south of Charleston, SC.

The Island lies on the Intracoastal Waterway and encompasses 42 square miles of semitropical, lowcountry terrain, including unspoiled sea marshes, deep-water creeks and brackish lagoons, heavily wooded forests of tall pines, palmettos, magnolias and live oaks, and 12 miles of broad Atlantic beach.

Driving to Hilton Head Island
From I-95: Take Exit 8 (eight miles from the Georgia border) and go east following signs to Hilton Head Island. This is Highway 278 and you will travel about 18 miles and then you cross the bridge to Hilton Head. Continue over the bridge and look for signs for the Cross Island Expressway. If you are going to the south end of the island (The Sea Pines Resort, Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Beach Resort & the Shipyard Golf Club) stay to your left and use the expressway (Toll $1.25) to save time. Otherwise, keep right and stay on Highway 278 Business for such Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, Hampton Inn-Hilton Head, Hilton Oceanfront Resort or the Port Royal Golf Club.

After you cross the bridge onto Hilton Head Island, look for the Welcome Center on your right. The Welcome Center has brochures on Hilton Head activities, additional maps and upcoming events.

By air
Two airports service the Hilton Head Island area:

  • Hilton Head Airport (HHH), located on the Island and approximately 5 - 7 miles from all local hotels, resorts and home & villa properties. Book direct flights from Charlotte on US Airways and from Atlanta on Delta Airlines.

  • Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), located approximately 45 miles south of the Island. Continental Express, Delta, Delta Connection, Air Tran, US Airways, United Express, Northwest, American Eagle and Independence Air offer daily flights into Savannah, including direct non-stop service from 17 U.S. cities. All flights are met by ground transportation companies. If renting a car, drive north on I-95 and follow the directions above.
